Hand Made vs Commercial

From: JuneMcAllister (nfmoon@mindspring.com) | Date: 2004-12-01 12:48:46 UTC-05:00
Doug,

I hope you were joking?...............but if you weren't...........

Why do you feel "sorry" for her? I still use the commercial personal stamp I started out with because I just wanted to GET STARTED and didn't know if I could carve stamps. I have commercial stamps in my first two boxes, once again, because I wanted to GET STARTED. I have carved all the ones since but have yet to come up with an idea for a personal stamp that excites me. I don't think anyone needs to feel "sorry" for me because I use a commercial personal stamp. Or anyone else, who for whatever reason, uses commercial stamps. As a little side note, a lot of the stamps I found in the box I sent to the MMM were commercial. I don't think those people were worried about anyone feeling sorry for them when their stamps were displayed for all at the MMM to see.

I did feel kinda sorry for the woman letterboxer in the story, who proudly
had her store-bought personal stamp displayed for all to see....

Me, too!
And I am grateful for every single stamp in our logbook, commercial or
hand-carved! When teen-aged son CactusLicker & I signed up for MMM, we still
had no idea what we were doing, and figured this was a way to become part of
a bigger community.
Well, it far exceeded our expectations!
I can't tell you how many times we've opened our Sphinx logbook and
delighted in the notes folks wrote - we especially got a kick out of people
telling us whether or not they guessed the riddle!
Personally, I could care less whether the stamp is hand-carved. I enjoy
seeing hand-carved images (and would give my right pinkie to be able to
carve like ScoutDogs!) but there are so many other aspects to enjoy - the
hike, the view, the company, the notes, the emails from great finders.

Sounds like Scoutdogs needs to teach some classes!

(many, many, many classes. . .and then maybe we'll get there. . .:)

We have been letterboxing for just over a year also. Like many
others We too used a commercial stamp. It fit our needs. It got us
out and boxing. Just last month we were able to find something that
was good enough to carve for our signature stamp. When we find a box
we are happy that someone took the time to plant that box, not look
in the box and have something about what type of stamp is in it. New
Stamp, Old Stamp, Fresh Cut, Old and Worn Out, Elaborate Commercial,
or just a Few Lines scratched on an old eraser. That stamp meant
something to that person. They wanted to share that with someone
else. Feel sorry for them, not us. We are happy they joined the
hobby that we enjoy so much.

No one would be able to tell if mine was commercial or hand made - When I first started stamping in, I had a Kokopelli stamp. Then I noticed that someone else had it, so I bought another one. Someone else started using that one, then I bought another. Well, guess what? So I decided to look at some clip art and I got another Kokopelli image and carved it myself so I would have a hand carved stamp for the Monster Mash in Mansfield, CT. No one would know whether I carved it myself or bought it. I don't care, but I am proud of my little stamp...

Well, our personal stamps are hand-carved but I haven't come up with
a good enough image for our family stamp (used when there's just not
enough room for four stamps with comments), so that one is a
commercial stamp. I'll replace it someday...

Re: [LbNA] Hand Made vs Commercial

Let me add that MizScarlet is also a stamp carver extraodinaire -- so
if you got it flaunt it.

But for me I don't mind the personal stamps being commercial - it is
the box stamps I prefer to be hand carved or at least commercially
amended so no two are alike. Why can't folks nick chip or reglue to
make it individual.

So no one has mentioned the quasi-commercial version. For the Red
Hat Box'rs I made a team stamp from a kit. You make a mold using a
xerox image and then pour in the rubber goop and it makes a stamp.
It also takes a lot of time but can have some very small detail -
like text and dots. And when you lose the stamp, you pour more goop
and make another (assuming you haven't lost the mold). OR you can
make multiples for all members of the team (yeah yeah yeah, I'll get
to it next year.) Here is the product:
http://www.artisanschoice.com/tellmeallaboutstamps1.html

In Dartmoor, some folks would do original art drawings, cluster as
many as possible on an 8x10 sheet and then send it off for commercial
production. Cut the rubber apart and make many stamps. Again there
is an element of the original, unique, artsy fartsy.

The End

Re: [LbNA] Hand Made vs Commercial

-I haven't done any PLB's yet. I've seen some of
Carving Carmen's stamps for some Irene has sent out.
The wether is getting colder so it might be something
to get me though the winter.

Knit Wit:

Have you tried using the letters of your first names to spell out something?
Or maybe the letters of your trail names? Not completely original, mind
you; but it would be hand carved and would give you some practice:)

My personal stamp is store bought as well. Since it fits me (dolphins-I love to swim) I don't plan on changing it anytime soon.

Ok, now that this has become more of a story-telling thread, I'll
bite the bait:
I have a commercial stamp. I didn't buy it. I won it. Years and
years ago I got lots of things for my kids from the Toys to Grow On
Catalog. They ran a contest in one issue where there was a little
cartoon mouse hiding around in and among the toys. If you could
correctly count his appearances and entered the number in a box on
the order form, you got a free stamp of the mouse. So I did, and I
did. In the following Christmas catalog I got a stamp of the same
mouse dressed as a jester the same way. I threw them both in the box
with my serious home-schooling stamps (coins, blank clock-face...)
and forgot about them.
Then came Smithsonian, then hubby discovered geocaching, and finally
the day when he sent me the LbNA link. I solved a mystery clue,
screamed "I KNOW where it is!!!" and the next day grabbed my mouse,
stopped at Staples for ink (black) and book (lined journal) and was
off and running.
So if you ever see my jaunty little mouse, and notice the
resemblance to Bilbo without his pocket-handkerchief or Mole
abandoning the whitewash, you'll see why I've kept him.
(now, what do I do with the jester and the serious stamps?...)
Aud
